John Rowen has spent two decades perfecting a tribute to Electric Light Orchestra, one of Birmingham's most celebrated bands. In a conversation with Moorlands Radio presenter Dave Stringer, Rowen reflected on how Jeff Lynne's music shaped his musical direction and the ongoing work to recreate ELO's distinctive sound.
From Hull Pubs to Tribute Band Leader
Rowen's musical journey began in the pubs and clubs around Hull, where he honed his performing skills before finding his life's mission. A pivotal moment came when he encountered Out Of The Blue, ELO's sixth studio album. That encounter set him on a path to create what he describes as the finest celebration of Jeff Lynne's work.
To realise that vision, Rowen assembled a group of talented musicians dedicated to the project. The ELO Experience is now acknowledged as one of the greatest homages to one of Birmingham's best.
Still Learning After Twenty Years
Despite two decades leading the tribute band, Rowen says he is still learning and improving. In his conversation with Moorlands Radio, he spoke about the early years of the ELO Experience and discussed how ELO's unique wall of sound is created — a technical challenge that remains central to the band's work.
