Birmingham City Council is working with West Midlands Police, local business districts and support organisations to improve safety and the experience of people using Cathedral Square and surrounding streets in the city centre.
The council's Community Safety team has joined the coordinated initiative to address behaviours that negatively impact residents, workers, visitors and businesses in the area.
How the partnership works
The approach combines visible engagement, targeted enforcement where necessary, and access to support services for vulnerable individuals. Activity focuses on responding to concerns raised by the local community while ensuring public spaces remain welcoming and accessible for everyone.
Councillor Jane Baston, Cabinet Member for Equalities Communities and Social Justice, said the initiative demonstrates the importance of strong partnerships. "By working together with the police, business representatives and support services, we can take a balanced approach that combines enforcement with early intervention and support for those who need it," she said.
"Cathedral Square is an important civic space used by thousands of residents, workers and visitors every week. Our priority is making sure people feel comfortable, safe and welcome when spending time in the city centre."
