Birmingham City Council is calling for applications from residents to carry the Baton of Hope when the UK's largest suicide prevention initiative returns to the city on Monday 13 September 2027.
The Baton of Hope brings together communities, organisations and individuals to raise awareness, challenge stigma and encourage more open conversations about suicide. The baton previously visited Birmingham in 2023 and will return as part of a 2027 tour covering 21 locations across the UK in 40 days.
Who can apply
Applications are open to anyone aged 16 and over who has been affected by suicide in any way. This includes those applying in memory of someone they have lost, to reflect on their own experiences of suicide, or because they believe every life is worth fighting for.
The deadline for applications is 31 January 2027. People can apply on the Baton of Hope website.
What the council says
Councillor Nosheen Khalid, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Birmingham City Council, said: "We're incredibly proud that Birmingham has been chosen to host the Baton of Hope again in September 2027 and we're now encouraging people from across the city to put themselves forward to be baton bearers.
"We know suicide affects families, friends, workplaces and communities across Birmingham. By taking part, Baton Bearers can help create conversations that save lives and remind people that support is available, and nobody should face difficult times alone."
Further details about Birmingham's route, activities and opportunities for organisations and communities to get involved will be announced nearer the event. For information about suicide prevention and support services in Birmingham, visit Birmingham City Council's suicide prevention webpages.
