Birmingham City Council is continuing to support residents affected by fires on Gorleston Road in Warstock and Hillmeads Road in Kings Norton.

The council has introduced overnight security patrols on both roads between 5pm and 7am to keep residents safe after property boundaries were damaged or destroyed. Temporary Heras fencing was installed on 20 August to provide additional security.

Cleanup and Ground Restoration

Council crews have carried out cleanup work, including removing trees badly damaged by the fires. This work has included trees on private land where needed. With the immediate cleanup operation complete, work will now begin to restore the affected grounds and surrounding areas.

Financial Support and Advice

The council is contacting affected residents to discuss council tax relief and provide advice on any additional financial support that may be available.

Council officers have been based at local community centres to support residents affected by the fires. Private tenants and homeowners have received practical advice and guidance to help them manage the challenges they are facing.

Council Response

Cllr Jane Baston, Cabinet Member for Equalities, Communities and Social Justice, said: "I have been out to talk to residents on Gorleston Road to hear their needs and concerns. Many have been thankful for the support they have received, but there are those who have told me they feel frustrated and want more support. We do hear those concerns and are looking at how we can support people where we can."

Cllr Baston added: "I have seen first-hand the work of more than 40 council staff who have been helping to clean the area. Officers have also been working directly with residents, knocking on doors and offering support. Council teams have been on the ground every day since the fires, doing everything they can to help those affected."

She confirmed that overnight security patrols will remain in place for two weeks.

The council is working closely with local organisations and volunteers to coordinate donations for those most in need.
